Syntheses of furan natural products

Abstract

Covering: 2011 to 2026

Furans with different substitution patterns can be found in various bioactive natural products. Developing new chemical reactions and catalytic systems for the controlled and selective synthesis of polysubstituted furans, and applying them strategically to the synthesis of furan natural products, represents a significant synthetic challenge and is a vibrant, ongoing area of research. This review provides a timely update on developments in the synthesis of furan natural products over the past decade and a half. The chemical synthesis of these natural products is organised according to the degree of substitution on the furan ring. General methods for furan synthesis are extracted from total syntheses and categorised. Progress in the biosynthetic study of furan moieties in natural products of various origins is also summarised briefly.
