MnCl2-promoted the C–C/C–O bond cleavage of lignin model compounds to aromatic compounds under mild conditions
Abstract
Despite oil depletion and rising energy needs, renewable lignocellulosic biomass is a sustainable alternative, however, lignin's complex linkages hinder its valorization. A two-step mild protocol using 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol cleaves its C–C/C–O bonds, with MnCl2-aided aerobic oxidation yielding alkyl benzoates and phenols efficiently, paving the way for high-value lignin conversion.
