Unlocking fast kinetics of n–p-type heterostructured MoS2@PANI photocathode toward robust low-overpotential Li–O2 batteries

Abstract

Li–O2 batteries have attracted much attention due to its ultra-high theoretical energy density; however, an overpotential of large charging/discharging limits its development. Herein, we report an inorganic/organic heterostructured MoS2@PANI cathode material to capture visible light, and the generated charge carriers were used to promote the oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. Bestowed by the unique structural advantage, MoS2@PANI achieves an ultra-low overpotential of 0.08 V and stable low-overpotential cycling at 0.05 mA cm−2 under light conditions. DFT calculations further reveal that the unique heterostructure significantly adjusts the adsorption of oxygenated intermediates, thus promoting Li2O2 formation and decomposition. This work provides insights into rationally designing inorganic/organic heterojunction to improve the electrochemical kinetics for efficient rechargeable Li–O2 batteries.
