Y. Han and W. Yang hereby wholly retract this Journal of Materials Chemistry B review article due to unattributed text overlap primarily with a Macromolecular Bioscience review by Brisa Peña et al.¹

In Sections 2.1 and 2.2, there is text overlap with this Macromolecular Bioscience review.¹ Although the Macromolecular Bioscience article has been cited, it was not made clear that some of the text was reproduced from this article. There are further significant portions of unattributed text overlap throughout this Journal of Materials Chemistry B article with other published articles, primarily an Acta Biomaterialia article by Jonathan Rodness et al.,² a Biomedical Materials review by Xuetao Sun et al.³ and an Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery review by Todd Johnson et al.⁴

In Sections 3.1 and 4.3, there is text overlap with the Acta Biomaterialia² and Biomedical Materials³ articles. Although the Acta Biomaterialia article was cited, the Biomedical Materials review was not, and it was not made clear that some of the text was reproduced from these articles.

The Conclusions are almost entirely reproduced from the conclusions of the Biomedical Materials³ and Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery⁴ reviews. Although the Expert Opinion on Drug Delivery article was cited, the Biomedical Materials article was not, and it was not made clear that the text was reproduced from these articles.

Y. Han and W. Yang apologise for the text overlap which arose due to poor writing practice.

Y. Han and W. Yang agree with this retraction. W. Cui, K. Yang, X. Wang, Y. Chen, L. Deng, Y. Zhao and W. Jin oppose this retraction as they only contributed to the outline and organisation of the article and were not aware of the text overlap.
