Abstract

A modification to Lewis's theory of valency is proposed to make it more consistent with the results of quantum-mechanical calculations on molecules containing polar covalent bonds (e.g., ClF) and hypervalent atoms (e.g., SF6). A distinction is drawn between the valence shell of an atom (VS) and the Lewis shell (LS). [Chem. Educ. Res. Pract. Eur.: 2001, 2, 67-72]
