Uncatalysed hydrogen-transfer reductions of aldehydes and ketones

Abstract
Aldehydes and ketones are reduced to the corresponding alcohols by transfer hydrogenation at high temperature with EtOH, PrnOH or PriOH as hydrogen donors in the absence of catalysts and base.

Recently, a bidentate aluminium complex, prepared in situ from Me3Al and 2,7-dim ethyl-1,8-biphenylenediol in the presence of PriOH or 1-phenylethanol, was reported for catalytic reductions of aldehydes and ketones.
