Abstract

From 2-methoxyphenol (4) and sulfur dichloride awealth of compounds are formed, but the reaction conditions canbe varied in such a way that either2,8-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxythianthrene (9) or1,6-dichloro-2,7-dihydroxy-3,8-dimethoxythianthrene (10) isformed predominantly; both compounds are characterized by X-raycrystallographic analysis.
