Synthesis of 2,3-Di-(2-adamantylidene)succinic Anhydride:a Highly Non-photochromic Overcrowded Fulgide†

Abstract

A two-step Stobbé condensation ofadamantan-2-one with dimethyl succinate and then dimethyl(2-adamantylidene)succinate affords a half-ester 5, which onhydrolysis and dehydration gives the title fulgide 7.
