Interaction of aqueous solutions of ammonia with carbons

Abstract

It is shown that aqueous ammonia interacts simultaneously with the surface of carbonaceous materials and the hydrophilic centres. The net heats derived from the enthalpy of immersion are, respectively, 0.083 J m–2 and 43 J mmol–1 of hydrophilic centres. This new technique, combined with immersion into pure water and with classical adsorption data provides rapid and reliable information on the surface of porous and non-porous carbons.
