Spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope. Keynote lecture
Abstract
Early spectroscopic results from the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are described, including detection of intergalactic material between the Earth and a quasi-stellar object, observations of a chemically unusual star with large overabundances of heavy metals and material surrounding a nearby star. Planned improvements to the HST by in-orbit interchange include correction for the spherical aberration and the provision of more capable instruments.
