Ionic hydration number in V2O5 intercalated xerogels Mx(H2O)yV2O5

Abstract

Ionic hydration numbers in the interfoliar water contained between V2O5 xerogel ribbons have been determined from the thermal behaviour of the intercalated compounds Mn+x(H2O)y(V2O5)0.3–0.4. An empirical relationship between the ionic hydration numbers and the field strengths Z/r of the ions has been established. The results are analogous to the corresponding data reported in the chemical literature. The cations are found to have a similar behaviour in the non-freezing interfoliar water inserted between V2O5 xerogel ribbons and in the free liquid water.
