Synthesis of the new bidentate tellurium ligands, (p-EtOC6H4)Te-(CH2)nTe(C6H4OEt-p)(n-1,5,6,7,9, or 10)

Abstract

The reaction between NaTeR (R = C6H4OEt-p) and Br(CH2)nBr (n= 1,5,6,7,9, or 10) gives the bis(tellurides)(RTe)2(CH2)n. For the single case of n= 5, a telluronium salt [RT[graphics omitted]H2)5]Br may be isolated under some experimental conditions. The new materials are characterised spectroscopically and, in particular, the 13C-{1H} n.m.r. spectra are discussed. Attempts to brominate some of the higher members of the series led to rupture of the Te–aryl bond and the isolation of (Br3Te)2(CH2)n, where n= 6 or 10.
