Study of the nitroprusside-sulphydryl test for aromatic thiols
Abstract
The Gmelin test for sulphide ions and organic thiolate anions, in which sodium nitroprusside [disodium nitrosopentacyanoferrate(II) dihydrate, Na2FeNO(CN)5.2H2O] gives a reddish purple colour in ammonia solution, has been found to be positive for non-aromatic thiols but negative with aromatic thiols.
