Chemistry of di- and tri-metal complexes with bridging carbene or carbyne ligands. Part 16. Synthesis of the trimetal compounds [M2M′(µ3-CC6H4Me-4)(CO)6(η-C5H5)3](M = Mo or W, M′= W; M = M′= Mo)

Abstract

The compounds [M2(CO)n(η-C5H5)2](M = Mo or W, n= 4 or 6) react with the alkylidynetungsten compound [W([triple bond, length half m-dash]CR)(CO)2(η-C5H5)](R = C6H4Me-4) in toluene at ca. 100 °C to give the trimetal complexes [M2W(µ3-CR)(CO)6(η-C5H5)3]. In contrast, [Cr2(CO)4(η-C5H5)2] and [W([triple bond, length half m-dash]CR)(CO)2(η-C5H5)] afford the µ-alkyne-ditungsten compound [W2(µ-RC2R)(CO)4(η-C5H5)2]. This reaction is catalysed by small quantities of the dichromium species, and a possible mechanism is proposed. The compound [Mo33-CR)(CO)6(r)-C5H5)3] was obtained in low yield from a complex mixture of products produced in the reaction of [Mo2(CO)4(η-C5H5)2] with [W([triple bond, length half m-dash]CR)Br(CO)4]. The 1H and 13C-{1H} n.m.r. data for the new compounds are reported and discussed.
