1,2-Dithia-5,8,11,14-tetraoxacyclohexadecane and 1,2-dithia-5,8,11,17-pentaoxacyclononadecane: ‘switched-on’ crown ethers

Abstract

3,6,9,12-Tetraoxacyclohexadecane-1,14-dithiol and 3,6,9,12,15-pentaoxaheptadecane-1,17-dithiol are pro-ionophores which can be converted by Fe3+ oxidation into the title compounds which are analogues of 15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6 and which exhibit enhanced ionophoric properties.
