Substrate-dependence of carbene reactivity: a theoretical study of 1,2-versus 1,4-addition

Abstract

An investigation by the M.N.D.O. method shows that the nucleophilicity of a singlet carbene is of less potential value as an energy lowering factor for the barrier to 1,4-addition than 1,2-addition reactions and that neither electrophilic nor nucleophilic singlet carbenes promote the synchronous 1,4-addition reaction over the corresponding 1,2-addition pathways.
