Photocatalysis of the homogeneous water-gas shift reaction

Abstract

The complex [RuCl(CO)(bipy)2]Cl, a product of the long term reaction of RuCl3.3H2O with 2 mol of bipyridyl (bipy) in refluxing dimethylformamide, produces H2, CO, and CO2 on photolysis in water; under CO the photochemical water–gas shift reaction is catalytic.
