Irradiation of 3-acetoxybenzo[b]thiophen 1,1-dioxide in the presence of cycloalkenes affords [π2 +π2] cycloadducts which undergo ring expansion to give substituted benzo[b]thiepinones on treatment with methanolic sodium hydroxide.
