Oxidation of ascorbic acid by a trivalent copper complex

Abstract

The kinetics of the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AsH2) by trivalent copper complex (1) were studied under anaerobic conditions over the pH range 2–7. A bell-shaped pH–rate profile was obtained indicating a maximum at pH 4.5. The active species near the maximum are the hydrated CuIII complex and the ascorbate ion.
