Leaving group abilities for the cathodic cleavage of p-methoxycarbonylbenzyl carboxylates

Abstract

Relative rates of cathodic cleavage of 11 p-methoxycarbonylbenzyl carboxylates have been measured by competitive electrolyses; of the carboxylate leaving groups studied naphthalene-1-carboxylate is the best, cyanoacetate the worst, and there is no obvious correlation between leaving group ability and structure.
