Rapid and quantitative aromatization of non-conjugated cyclohexadienes by potassium permanganate in benzene

Abstract

γ-Terpinene (1; R = H) and other non-conjugated cyclohexadienes are quantitatively aromatized with KMnO4 dissolved in benzene by complexing with the macrocyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6, whereas the conjugated analogues do not react under identical conditions.
