Irradiation of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) with NN-dimethyl-p-toluidine in methanol gave a biphenyl derivative together with N-cyanomethyl-N-methyl-p-toluidine through radical reactions of the thermal reaction products, NNN-trimethyl-p-toluidinium salts.
