The cyclo-octanone, 2,2,6,8-tetramethylbicyclo[5.3.1]undec-7-en-3-one (6), formed by the action of lead tetra-acetate on patchouli alcohol (1), is readily cyclized to 2,2,6,8-tetramethyltricyclo[5.3.1.03,7]undec-8-en-3-ol (8).
