Study of the ring-opening reactions of derivatives of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-dideoxy-2,3-epimino-α-D-allosides with azide ion has shown that these are ‘normal’(i.e. major diaxal opening) and not ‘abnormal’(i.e., major diequatorial opening) as previously reported. Some ring-opening reactions of the corresponding manosides are also reported.
