The Kerr constant of water and other pure liquids at 633 nm
Abstract
The Kerr constant B of pure water has been determined as 2.96 × 10–14 V–2 m at 20 °C for light of wavelength 633 nm from pulsed electric birefringence measurements. Pure liquid B(633 nm) values were obtained also with this equipment for benzene, p-xylene, toulene, chloroform and chlorobenzene relative to carbon disulphide as standard.
