Quadrupole ion store (quistor). Part 1.—Ion–molecule reactions in methane, water and ammonia

Abstract

The rate constants for ion–molecule reactions occurring in carbon dioxide + hydrogen mixtures, methane, water and ammonia have been determined employing the novel technique of trapping ions within a quadrupole ion store (Quistor) attached to a quadrupole mass filter. The results are consistent with literature values and with tentative calculations, both indicating a mean primary ion kinetic energy in the range 1 to 3 eV.
