Temperature-dependent and polarised electronic spectra of a single crystal of sodium tetrachloroaurate dihydrate are reported and the 1A1g→1A2g(dxy→dx2–y2), 1A1g→1B2g(dxy→s), and 1A1g→1Eg(dxy→dxzdyz) transitions assigned.
