Extraordinary effect of remote aromatic rings on the Birch reduction of isolated double bonds: a chemical manifestation of orbital interactions through bonds

Abstract

The presence of remote aromatic rings in (1) and (2) dramatically enhance the Birch reduction of the norbornene double bond by factors of 180 and 210 respectively and these results have been explained in terms of orbital interactions through bonds.
