The determination of trace amounts of vanadium in titanium(IV) chloride by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Abstract

A method is described for the determination of trace amounts of vanadium in titanium(IV) chloride involving pre-concentration and the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometric techniques. The titanium(IV) chloride is added to a 40 per cent. solution of hydrofluoric acid and the mixture evaporated to a small volume. The vanadium is precipitated as the diethyldithiocarbamate complex at pH 5·0 in the presence of a co-precipitating agent, such as manganese(VII), and collected on a cellulose filter. The titanium is retained in solution by complexing it with malic acid. A lower limit of determination of 0·05 µg g–1 of vanadium is obtained.
