Organic reactions in strong alkalis. Part VI. Further studies on alkali fusion reactions of keto- and hydroxy-acids

Abstract

The alkali fusion reactions of 12-oxo-, 7-oxo-, and 2-hydroxy-octadecanoic acid have been investigated. The formation of 2-(5-carboxypentyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acids on alkali fusion of aleuritic acid (9,10,16-trihydroxyhexadecanoic acid) has been established and rationalised in terms of the known reactions of the appropriate mono- and di-hydroxycarboxylic acids.
