Reactivity parameters and aromatic systems. Part II. Detritiation of substituted fluoranthenes

Abstract

Rates of detritiation in trifluoroacetic acid have been measured for a series of bromo- and nitro-substituted 2-, 3-, and 8-tritiofluoranthenes. Rates at 70·0 °C (in some cases, shown italicised, found from measurements at 128·25 °C), relative to that of the parent tritiofluoranthene are as follows: (a) 2-tritio-compounds: 3-Br 0·274; 4-Br 0·009; 8-Br 0·491; 9-Br 0·390; (b) 3-tritio-compounds: 4-Br 0·103; 8-Br 0·425; 9-Br 0·104; 1-NO22·00×10–4; 4-NO22·08×10–3; 6-NO22·78×10–3; 7-NO26·58×10–3; 8-NO28·00×10–4; 9-NO23·10×10–3; 10-NO26·70×10–4; (c) 8-tritio-compound: 3-Br 0·370. The main features of the results are discussed, and in some cases are interpreted theoretically.
