Mechanistic conclusions regarding the E1CB reaction in the base-catalysed elimination from XCH2·CH2OPh were drawn by comparing the relative rates for the elimination with those for nucleophilic vinylic reactions on XCH:CHR and with kion and Keq of the carbon acids MeX.
