Macrocyclic derivatives of cobalt including some new organometallic complexes

Abstract

The syntheses of cobalt(II) complexes containing the macrocyclic Schiffs bases NN′-disalicylidene-o-phenylenediamine (saloph), NN′-bis-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylmethylene)ethylenediamine(napsalen), NN′-bis-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylmethylene)-o-phenylenediamine (napsaloph), the corresponding acetyl-cobalt(III) and bromo-triphenylphosphine cobalt(III) complexes, and certain acyl-cobalt(III) complexes containing the Schiff's base NN′-disalicylidene-ethylenediamine (salen) are described and their i.r., 1H n.m.r., and u.v.–visible spectra reported. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the cobalt(II) complexes are low-spin. It is concluded that the acyl-cobalt(III) complexes as a group may exist in more than one configuration.
