Electron impact studies on some group III metal alkyls

Abstract

Trimethyl derivatives of the Group III elements (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl) have been studied mass spectroscopically at low- and high-source temperatures, and a range of electron voltages. Some specimens of Me3Ga gave a trimeric and dimeric ion (Me9Ga3+˙, Me5Ga2+). Trivinylgallium, reported as dimeric in benzene, gave no associated ions. The fragmentation behaviour of these compounds is described and appearance potential measurements are reported for Me3Ga and (CH2:CH)3Ga, from which [D with combining macron](Me–Ga)= 55·6 ± 2 kcal mol–1.
