Concentration dependence of electrolyte conductance. Part 2.—Comparison of experimental data with the Fuoss-Onsager and Pitts treatments

Abstract

The Fuoss-Onsager (F) and Pitts (P) treatments of electrolytic conductance have been compared using 44 sets of experimental results for 1-1 salts in water. The comparison shows that the two-parameter version of (F) involving Λ0 and the closest distance of approach a does not satisfactorily fit the experimental results. The three-parameter version of (F) involving Λ0, a, and an association constant KA can be fitted closely to experimental data, but the values of a required are unreasonably small and the association constant is negative in nearly all cases, which is physically impossible. The (P) theory which involves only Λ0 and a, can be fitted closely to experiment using reasonable values of a, and is therefore considered more satisfactory than the (F) theory.
