Nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra of chlorine in some d8-transition-metal complexes

Abstract

The 35Cl nuclear quadrupole resonance frequencies in some 22 compounds of the type L2MCl2(M = NiII, PdII, or PtII have been detected and are discussed in terms of the electronic structure of the complex. In trans-L2PdCl2 complexes, the 35Cl frequencies appear to depend on the electron-donor power of the ligand L. The 35Cl resonance signals in three trans-L2PtCl2 complexes are found at higher frequencies than in the corresponding cis-complex, and this difference is related to the charges on the ligands. In trans-(Bun3PPdCl2)2, the bridging 35Cl signal is found near 12·8 MHz at 0 °C, considerably lower than the terminal 35Cl signal at 19·50 MHz.
