Madelung constants of rhombohedrally-distorted caesium-chloride-type lattices

Abstract

The variation of Madelung constants with the face angle of the rhombohedron produced by distortion of a caesium-chloride-type lattice along one of its four threefold axes has been computed. Maxima are found at face angles of the unit cell of 90°(CsCl, Pm3m) and 60°(NaCl, Fm3m) and a minimum at about 79°. Negative values of the Madelung constant are found at angles of 24° and less.
