Enthalpies of mixing and complex formation of carbon tetrachloride with some methyl-substituted benzenes. Part II

Abstract

Measurements are reported of the enthalpy of mixing of carbon tetrachloride with o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, mesitylene, and pseudocumene over the temperature range 0–55 °C. A modified design of calorimeter vessel is described. The results obtained are discussed by use of the theoretical treatment developed in Part I1 which assumes the formation of complexes in solution between carbon tetrachloride and the methylbenzenes. The results could be fitted reasonably well to the theory with the exception of the CCl4+o-xylene system. The enthalpy of mixing of the system CCl4+m-xylene was found to show a double maximum at ca. 15–20 °C where the enthalpy of mixing curve changes sign.
