Attempted preparation of 1,2-dihydrobenz[cd]indazole from dimethyl 1,2-dihydrobenz[cd]indazole-1,2-dicarboxylate shows that it exists in more stable tautomeric forms with the aromatic indazole rather than naphthalene nucleus.
