Molecular conformation of benzylideneanilines; relation to electronic structure and spectra

Abstract

X-Ray analysis of benzylideneaniline and of two para-substituted derivatives has shown that the aniline ring is twisted out of the C–N[double bond, length half m-dash]C–C plane by 40–55°, a result that bears on the apparently anomalous u.v. spectrum of benzylideneaniline derivatives.
