Charge-transfer chromatography of polycyclic hydrocarbons

Abstract

It is shown that the chromatographic behaviour of polycyclic hydrocarbons is modified by the relative strength of charge-transfer interactions when an insoluble electron acceptor, such as pyromellitic dianhydride, is dispersed in the solid phase. Improved separation of mixtures can be obtained, and brightly coloured spots fluorescing in the visible region allow ready identification of components.
