Solvation spectra. Part 23.—Electron spin resonance study of sodium salt of 2,6-dimethyl-p-benzosemiquinone

Abstract

The electron spin resonance spectrum of the sodium salt of 2,6-dimethyl-p-benzosemiquinone in t-pentanol is analyzed in terms of two structurally different contact ion-pairs. The interconversion of these ion-pairs results in an apparent shift in most of the hyperfine lines. The fractional population ratio is about 9 in favour of an association with the oxygen atom remote from the methyl groups.
