Correlation between sodium h.f.s.c. and frequency of visible absorption peak of sodium benzophenone for changes in environment

Abstract

The sodium h.f.s.c. and the position of the visible absorption peak maximum for sodium benzophenone ion-pairs have been measured over a range of experimental conditions in order to correlate the two properties. Two types of change have been studied—change of solvent at room temperature and change of temperature in DME. An explanation of the observed trends in the two properties has been suggested based on a model for the ion-pair in which the cation is located over the plane of the anion near to the oxygen and the adjacent carbon atom. This model is the only one which provides a satisfactory explanation of all the experimental observations.
