The preparation and spectral characterisation of some 2-arylfurans is described and their Diels–Alder reactions with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate are discussed. The adduct formed with 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)furan rearranges to a diphenyl derivative, whilst tetracyanoethylene affords the product of a net substitution.
