Synthesis of some precursors of 1,3,8-naphthalenetriol and related compounds

Abstract

The preparation of 3,5-dimethoxyphenylnitromethane is described. Its base-catalysed addition to methyl acrylate and crotononitrile gives adducts, elaboration of which via the Nef reaction and subsequent reduction leads to known precursors of 6,8-dimethoxy-1-naphthol and its 3-methyl derivative. A one-step synthesis of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethoxybenzil from 3,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid is also described.
