Proton nuclear magentic resonance spectra of some N-substituted 3-amino-4-phenylcyclobutenediones

Abstract

The preparation of some N-substituted 3-amino-4-phenylcyclobutenediones is reported. N.m.r. spectroscopy has shown that there is restricted rotation about the C–N bond in the 3-dimethylamino-, 3-diethylamino-, and 3-dibenzylamino-4-phenylcyclobutenedione. Free energies of activation for rotation about the C–N bond in these compounds have been calculated.
