The paper reports the preparation of some hitherto unknown squaramides (IV)–(IX). N.m.r. spectroscopy has established that there is restricted rotation about the N–C bond in 3-dimethylamino-(IV), 3-diethylamino-(VI), and 3-dibenzylamino-4-ethoxycyclobutenedione (VIII) and free energies of activation for rotation about the N–C bond have been calculated for these compounds.
