Kinetics of the manganese(III)–vanadium(IV) electron-transfer reaction in aqueous perchlorate solution

Abstract

The rate law d[VV]/dt=kobs[VIV][MnIII] holds for the range 5–20° and 0·8–3·0M-HClO4, kobs being 9·2 × 103 l. mole–1 min.–1 at 20° and 3M. The kinetic data provide further evidence of the appreciable hydrolysis of manganese(III), in the [HClO4]-dependence of kobs. Rate constants for reactions of vanadium(IV) with several cationic oxidants are shown to follow just the same sequence as those for the corresponding reactions of iron(II).
