Ionization of methanesulphonic acid in aqueous solution at 25°C by proton magnetic resonance measurements

Abstract

From measurements of the proton chemical shifts in aqueous solutions of methanesulphonic acid at 25°C, degrees of ionization have been calculated which are in accord with values obtained by Raman spectroscopy at the higher concentrations but not below 10 M. The ionization constant estimated is 16 mole l.–1, a factor of 5 lower than Clarke and Woodward's estimate.1 Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.
