Negligible steric retardation by the carboxy-group in the racemisation of 8′-methyl-1,1′-binaphthyl-8-carboxylic acid

Abstract

8′-Methyl-1,1′-binaphthyl-8-carboxylic acid has been synthessised and resolved into its enantiomeric forms. Arrhenius parameters and transition-state theory functions for racemisation in NN-dimethylformamide solution have been determined and are compared with those for optically active 1,1′-binaphthyl and its relevant substitution products.
